Shoto-Ryu Karate-Kai

The Shoto-Ryu Karate club in Shepshed has been running since 1995 at the Glenmore Centre. The club meets on a Monday night starting at 7.30pm and finishes at 9.30pm.

Ages that are taught are from 12 years or above. Shoto-Ryu karate traces its roots back to Gichin Funakoshi (The founder of modern day karate) and tries to maintain its links with the early methods of learning.

It emphasises the development of the mind through the body with the ultimate goal of both the mind and body working as one. It is a traditional style and is not practised as a competitive style.

There is philosophy attached to all martial arts, this should run as a companion to the martial art and with Shoto-Ryu karate it is part of it.

There are many things that the practice has to offer-if you practised regularly it will help to strengthen the body, make you fitter, it will help to increase your concentration, it will give you self-discipline and help to defend yourself from attack.

All these things can be possible to any one, all that is required is the first step. We do warm up exercises that are used to prepare the body for the practice, this involves some strengthening techniques and some flexibility techniques, both are designed to benefit the body physically, mentally and spiritually.

East Midlands Shoto-Ryu karate brings the principals of Yoga, Tai Chi and karate into its martial art by developing the body, mind and spirit to become one, all working together.
